Dedicated with love and thanks to Tina and José. Nothing In the World was Tina Charles' debut single. With a release date of Valentine's Day 1969, Tina was still a few weeks away from her fifteenth birthday. Tina recalls that her stage school teachers showed scant interest in her singing abilities; natural talent, ambition and early public performances paved the way for a recording career. Tina recorded a number of demo discs for singer and songwriter Valerie Avon in 1968 and 1969. Avon, who had hit record writing credits to her name, wrote the A-side and produced both sides of Tina's first 45RPM. The tremendous talent that burst forth from the grooves of those early demos didn't disappoint on Tina's first record release either. It was clear: this young lady was born to sing and was meant to make records. The collaboration continued through three more singles for CBS Records: In The Middle Of The Day, Good To Be Alive (featuring backing by a young Elton John) and a wonderful cover of Melanie's Bo-Bo's Party. Avon wrote some of the songs and produced all of the tracks. Despite decent songs, strong performances from Tina and positive press reviews, the singles didn't make it into the pop charts. Tina's talents weren't wasted, however, as by 1970 (when her fourth single was released), she was also utilising her singing skills as a backing and session singer. Tina has provided the anonymous voice behind countless cover versions of hit records used on budget compilation albums that were popular as cheaper choices for the record buying public. (See my Tina Charles playlist for many of the excellent cover versions Tina recorded: • Плейлист ) The early 1970s saw Tina signed to Gordon Mills' recently launched MAM Records. There was a solo single, Baby Don't You Know Anymore (1971), Tina appeared as a support act on Tom Jones' tour and TV special, and had a weekly singing spot on the first series of BBC TV's The Two Ronnies (available on DVD). For a time Tina was part of the female trio Wild Honey, with singles There's No Stopping Us (a Supremes cover, 1972) and He's My Sugar (1973). Tina then joined the religiously-oriented group Heritage, providing a fantastic lead vocal for their 1973 single Following A One Man Band. A 1972 recording Tina made of Martha and the Vandellas' I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playin' was released as a single in 1976. It is an excellent cover version, but was probably released by her former record label MAM to try to cash in on Tina's popularity after her smash hit I Love To Love. It did not chart. Baby Don't You Know Anymore was similarly reissued later that year. Ten tracks from this period in the early 1970s were put together to make the album Tina Sings. Tina continued to record cover versions and took the lead vocal on The Playthings' superb single Surrounded By A Ray Of Sunshine in 1974, which was produced by Biddu. Another great single Tina recorded with Biddu that year was One Broken Heart For Sale. This time Tina had her name on the record, which was released in 1975. Success came in 1974 when Tina joined fellow session singer Martin Jay to form Airbus, scoring a European hit with Fly Away. Tina joined Jay again as the group Vibrations for one single, Compromise (1975), before both went on to have an internationally successful single, I'm On Fire, as 5000 Volts (Airbus appears on some releases, but was replaced with 5000 Volts). Tina recorded three other tracks for 5000 Volts (Airbus): Bye Love, Motion Man and Look Out I'm Coming. The track selections used on 5000 Volts' singles featuring Tina's vocal varied by country and date. Tina states that she was only paid a session fee for her vocals while with 5000 Volts. Problems ensued and the 5000 Volts songs were subsequently re-recorded using a new vocalist. I'm On Fire with vocals by Tina survived intact to make it to 70s CD compilations, but the other tracks remain only on old vinyl. Following this, Tina embarked upon her successful solo career, collaborating once again with Biddu, having three UK top ten singles in 1976, including her worldwide smash I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves To Dance). Tina released singles every year for the remainder of the 1970s and released four original albums between 1976 and 1980. Although recording less frequently in the 1980s, 1990s and in more recent years, Tina has made many excellent recordings during this time, which all fans should seek out to enjoy and add to their music libraries! Although already posted to YouTube, I was asked to upload Tina Charles' debut single Nothing In The World to include better background information. I made this video to celebrate Tina Charles' debut record release, featuring the discs, sheet music and cover art of (almost) all of the singles from her first decade of making records, 1969-1979. / ddlee76 / boljoe
