David Bahati, the Minister of State for Trade, has called on Ugandan voters to use the peace ushered in by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government as a guiding factor when choosing leaders in the upcoming general elections. Bahati, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ndorwa County West, made the remarks on Wednesday during the launch of the 2026 Tarehe Sita celebrations at Kigezi High School Primary Playground in Kabale District. The 2026 Tarehe Sita national celebrations will be hosted in the Kigezi region, specifically at UNITE (formerly National Teachers College–Kabale), under the theme: “Defending the Gains of the Revolution and Honouring the Sacrifices of the Freedom Fighters: A Call for National Unity, Peace, and Socio-Economic Transformation.” Bahati said that the guerilla struggle that brought the NRM to power has left a “visible and undeniable positive impact” on Uganda, an achievement he urged voters not to take for granted by electing what he described as incapable leaders in the forthcoming polls. He further asked Ugandans to reflect on what he called the “negative consequences” that could arise if figures such as Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP), were elected to lead the country. Bahati rallied voters to instead “overwhelmingly support” incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to ensure continued peace and economic progress. The minister also applauded the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for selecting Kigezi as the host region for the 2026 Tarehe Sita celebrations, saying the choice reflects the army’s appreciation of the contributions made by people from Kigezi in the liberation struggle. Speaking as chief guest, State Minister for Defense (General Duties) Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth commended the UPDF for its discipline and dedication in safeguarding Uganda’s sovereignty.
