20 minutes in Edinburgh is easily enough for a bit of adventure in the Scottish Capital... The sun was shining, there was a pause in the Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival, and we'd just heard Alastair Humphreys talking about the joy of the micro-adventure, a subject on which we couldn't agree more. So we headed to that most nostalgic of Edinburgh spots, Arthur's Seat. The city-park-sized mountain sits directly over Pollock Halls, where I lived as a student in my first year, and (like a lot of students with a penchant for nature) during that time I was up there in snow, for sunrise, for sunset, over cloud inversions and at night, and it never gets boring - not only because of the views, but also because of the great scrambling on the front face. All these years later, Gary took me up the gully way off to the left of the normal route, as a line he'd just explored his way up one afternoon - a new route for me. ... inspired by the festival, we took a couple of cameras, and this is the result - hope you like it :o) Since that day, I found that the route has a name, North West Crack Direct, and a grade (VDiff - though honestly I think it's rather a Diff or even a Mod - maybe it's been up-graded because climbing - i.e. with ropes/protection - is not allowed, so you can only scramble). Now that I come to upload this, I also can't find the source I used to find that out! But the UKC has a good page on Arthur's Seat climbing, and Historic Scotland have the guidelines for climbing in Holyrood park generally: http://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/cra... http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/h...
