In this video, Dr. Nicole Gauthier, Extension Plant Pathologist discusses some basic disease prevention strategies for harvest, handling, and storage. Infections that cause disease (fungi, bacteria, water molds) can occur in fields or high tunnels during the growing season, during harvest and handling, and in storage. Disease-causing pathogens, opportunistic microbes that take advantage of wounds, and saprobes that colonize damaged tissue are all important considerations for growers. Management is most effective with a combination of cultural practices (sanitation, rogueing, handling) and fungicides (conventional or organic).
