Mid of Faymann leaving, pan right STORYLINE: Austria withdrew the first 66 soldiers of its peacekeeping forces in the Golan Heights on Wednesday. The soldiers arrived back at Vienna airport where they where greet by Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann. Faymann said the reason for the withdrawal was due to the end of the EU weapons embargo against Syria and the widening of combat operations. "By now the Syrian civil war is also being fought in the operational area of the UN forces, and the demilitarised zone has long become a part of combat operations. In addition to that, the EU weapons embargo has ended which in no way has made the region safer. The opposite is the case," Faymann said. Austria is planning to withdraw all of its 380 soldiers within the next four weeks. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for the strengthening of the 911-member peacekeeping force in the Golan Heights to 1,250 and improving its self-defence equipment. The force, known as UNDOF, has been posted in the Golan since 1974 to monitor the ceasefire between Syria and Israel. In a heavy blow to the mission, Austria announced last week that it would pull out its peacekeepers.
