Signal isn't light. Signal is certainty. Because of this, when shooting an astro photo, it is as important to integrate for space as the DSO. It's also important to develop the space part of the signal correctly, because improper development (often done by overreliance on stretching scripts) leads to poorly portrayed and inaccurate space. Such errors have doubtless perpetuated myths such as the perennial "space isn't black" error.
