Happy Earth Day! I don't often take instruments into the forest. I prefer to let the natural ambience of the woods be the music that accompanies my journey. But today I brought my harmonium with me to play a beautiful church hymn beneath a canopy of trees. "Nearer My God to Thee" is a hymn steeped in history, as it was reportedly the last song played by the band on the Titanic as she sank. As I rested silently there in that arboreal sanctuary, and listened to the natural music that surrounded me, I had the following thoughts: Tread lightly to the edge of a forest and you will hear a special kind of music that requires an open mind to enjoy. You might not hear it at first, but it's always there. It's there in the crescendo of a gathering wind as it rattles the needles of a swaying pine, the rhythmic drumming of a woodpecker against a towering oak, and it's there in the cheerful melodies of a wandering sparrow, resounding and clear, piercing the morning air from locations unknown. It's a symphony of sound that has enraptured this land since the dawn of creation, and it becomes more beautiful when we quiet ourselves and just listen.
