In 2003, Santa Clarita community activists fought to save an estimated 400-year-old oak tree. Los Angeles County public works staff wanted to remove it for the widening of Pico Canyon Road to increase traffic flow for the upcoming Newhall Ranch development. John Quigley wasn't going to let that happen and spent 71 days sitting in the tree. Ultimately, he was removed, but his action resulted in the community and the county reaching an agreement. The tree was moved a quarter mile down the road to Pico Canyon Park. Its massive branch span of 104 feet and height of 58 feet was not an easy task for movers. The move once held a Guinness Book world record for the largest tree to be transplanted. Thanks to the efforts of John Quigley and activists, the tree still stands today, showcasing its complicated journey of survival, but also its perseverance and beauty through the process of life. #scvhistory #santaclaritavalley #johnquigley #environmentalactivism 👉 If you enjoy this video, please like 👍, share with friends & community, and subscribe for more stories from the Santa Clarita Valley’s past. 👉 FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS ✔ Instagram - / santaclaritahistorycenter ✔ Facebook - / scvhistorybuffs ✔ Threads - https://www.threads.com/@santaclarita... 👉 EXPLORE THE SCVHISTORY ARCHIVE ✔ SCVHistory.com - https://scvhistory.com/
