This is going to be a very short history of the brand and the key role of Hedi Slimane for the brand. Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) started as a French luxury fashion label in 1961 by Laurent himself and his partner Pierre Bergé. In 1966 he was the first to popularize the concept of “ready to wear” or Ready-to-wear and he was the first to put women in a suit…and a tuxedo at that…called the Le Smoking tuxedo…and it caused such an outrage at the time since the status quo was for women to be in dresses and skirts He was heavily quoted for saying: "Chanel freed women, and I empowered them." He would also say: "I created the contemporary woman's wardrobe." Now Hedi Slimane was in the driver’s seat for the brand from 2012 to 2016, and during that time one of the key things he did that shook up the brand was renaming it to simply “Saint Laurent”…but the interesting thing is when Pierre Bergé was asked to react to this, he was actually quite happy with it and said that Yves original name for the ready to wear line was in fact just “Saint Laurent” so in a way it was actually just a return to the brand’s roots, which is never a bad thing. “its been like that for a minute hedi slimane!” Why did YSL drop the Y: http://www.elle.fr/Mode/Les-news-mode...
