João Florêncio is joined on this panel by harm reduction and trans activist Tut Bar to discuss chemsex beyond a (self-)harm paradigm. While sexualised drug use can undeniably have negative impacts on health and wellbeing, the prevailing narrative both within healthcare contexts, mainstream media, and community organisations tends to overlook the positive experiences that lead people to repeatedly engage in sex on drugs. Drawing from grassroots activist knowledge and scholarship on critical chemsex studies, this panel takes seriously those positive experiences to be central to a better understanding of the contexts, patterns, and ecologies of sexualised drug use. Only by doing so, the panellists believe, will we be able to grasp chemsex cultures more fully, to acknowledge and respect the self-affirming effects many people associate with drug use, and—through that—foster an environment of openness and dialogue that, in helping fight the social stigma associated with chemsex, can create better pathways for chemsex practitioners to feel OK seeking help and support whenever they need it, knowing that their experiences and life narratives will be acknowledged and respected.
