Ben Miller moderates a discussion between writer and historian Edna Bonhomme and artist, DJ, and activist Muhammad Jabali about the changing cityscape of Berlin and the relationship between race, nightlife, gentrification, and the real estate market. What are the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion that go into making a party space? How is nightlife a factor in (and frankly a marketing tool for) the gentrification of Berlin? How are newer (and older) communities of color remaking Berlin’s neighborhoods, and how does gentrification threaten them? How can we build movements of solidarity, acknowledging and across difference, that challenge the wave of real estate investment (more foreign capital has flowed into real estate in recent years in Berlin than several other major European cities combined) and how can the recent Berlin tenants movements, like the campaign to socialize 250,000 units of formerly-public housing, be models for other cities? The panelists also address a recent incident of racism by club staff that led Cocktail D’Amore to seek a new home.
