There was so much to explore with it being such a large site, and the added excitement of walking through ancient tunnels and rooms was amazing. I just really love old stuff! Whilst there I also filmed the beautiful Studley Royal Water Gardens which are part of the site at Fountains Abbey, so look out for that walk in another episode. I really hope you enjoy this walk as much as I did. Fountains Abbey was founded around 1132 after the exile of 13 monks from Benedictine St Mary’s Abbey in York, who through their desire for reform had enacted a dispute and subsequent riot. The abbey soon became a thriving centre of Cistercian religious activity before it was eventually torn down by Henry VIII in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries over 400 years after it was founded. Like many in the country, Fountains Abbey suffered during the 14th century as a result of economic hardship and the Black Death and began to slowly deteriorate. The abbey only flourished again following restoration work in the 15th century. Today, Fountains Abbey is owned by the National Trust and is the largest set of monastic ruins in England, attaining UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986. The abbey precinct covers 70 acres and is surrounded by an 3.4m high wall built in the 13th century, some parts of which are visible to the south and west of the abbey. The area consists of three concentric zones cut by the River Skell flowing from west to east across the site. The cellarium of Fountains Abbey is also home to several species of bats which only come out after dusk. The abbey’s vast scale gives an idea just how important the monastic community was in medieval England, and in the surrounding grounds is a sprawling Georgian water gardens, an Elizabethan hall, and a medieval deer park.
