► SUPPORT THE CHANNEL https://buymeacoffee.com/walktheworld... Join me on this relaxing late afternoon walk through the small village of Appleby in North Lincolnshire, England. As small as this village is, I still really enjoyed the walk and found the church to have one of the most intricately carved and ornate exteriors I have ever had the pleasure to stumble upon. As always, it's a shame to discover a locked church as I do enjoy snooping around these ancient buildings. The moment I stopped filming I saw a couple of deer wandering the woods I'd just left, which is always a special moment. I do hope you enjoy this one. St Bartholomew, can trace its origins back to the 13th century and was partly rebuilt in the 1800’s. It boasts a rich array of stone battlements, pinnacles and fearsome gargoyles and grotesques, as well as a variety of animals, angels, medieval folk. There are even dragons carved on its corbel table. The exterior is richly adorned with a wonderful collection of beautifully carved Gargoyles and Grotesques. It is alleged that some of the more colourful were based on village characters of the day. Built in 1850 by Charles Winn, the old village school was attended by around 100 pupils. When the school closed in 1982 the building found a new purpose, serving the village as a Village Hall replacing the old Village Hall situated at the west end of the playing field. The Thatched Cottage is an instantly recognisable Appleby landmark and is also well known throughout the county. It was built, along with other properties in the village of this type, around 1700. It is a very robust stone construction with thick walls and beamed ceilings. Although it now boasts a thatched the roof, for many years it was topped with clay pantiles. The main part of the roof is constructed from Norfolk Reed. It is expected to last around 40 years. The ridge is created from long straw, reed would be too strong to bend over the top. This ‘topping’ will last around 10 years. the ridge is topped with traditional straw animals – an owl and a pussycat, which was inspired by the poem read at the wedding of the current residents.
