Just a few short days before his untimely death, succumbing to Tuberculosis, Jimmie Rodgers began recording twelve sides in New York City. He was unwell and in financial hardship, concerned for his family's future, so he had asked that a summer's scheduled recording session be moved ahead to May. It was his second day of the session, May 17, 1933, that he recorded 'Dreaming With Tears In My Eyes'. Reportedly, after recording only three songs that second day, Rodgers was so weak that he had to be carried out of the studio and needed two full days’ rest before he could return. After he finished recording the last of the 12 songs on May 24th, Jimmie took a visit to Coney Island before returning to his hotel. On his return, he collapsed. Later that evening, and as a complication of his tuberculosis, he began to hemorrhage and slipped into a coma. Jimmie Rodgers died in the early morning hours of May 26th. Five years later, on the fifth anniversary of his death, 'Dreaming With Tears In My Eyes' was released on RCA Victor's Bluebird label, May 25, 1938. This record is one of those original records released. In 1962, RCA Victor released an alternate take of the song on a Jimmie Rodgers compilation album titled, "Country Music Hall Of Fame". In 1997, a rendition of the song by Bono, of U2, was included as the opening track to the Various Artist's tribute release; 'The Songs Of Jimmie Rodgers (A Tribute)'. Other artists who added their renditions to the tribute release were Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss, Dwight Yoakam, Van Morrison, Aaron Neville, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson, among others. I recorded this video of my original Jimmie Rodgers release on Bluebird Records 78 RPM playing on my turntable to share the experience of playing 78s with those who also enjoy the hobby and history of vinyl records, especially of early original versions and Country Blues. I do not claim or own, nor imply ownership, of the song or music recording in any way. Lyrics My heart is longing for you, Dear I cared for you more than you knew Though you have broken each promise And yesterday's dreams are untrue Alone, I'll be yearning tomorrow When sunshine brings memories of you My sunshine will turn into sorrow As I dream of the love we once knew Why should I always be lonely When sunny and blue are the skies While shadows of loneliness linger I'm dreaming with tears in my eyes (yodel) Why did you promise me, Sweetheart Never to leave me alone Yesterday's sunshine has faded Your love was not true like my own Alone, I'll be yearning tomorrow When sunshine brings memories of you My sunshine will turn into sorrow As a dream of the love we once knew Why should I always be lonely When sunny and blue are the skies While shadows of loneliness linger I'm dreaming with tears in my eyes (yodel)
