#JohnsonHouse #UndergroundRailRoad #FugitiveSlaveAct JOHNSON HOUSE HISTORIC SITE Johnson House is an Underground Railroad station and a house museum where groups can deepen their understanding of the Underground Railroad. Owned by the Johnson family until 1908, their anti-slavery beliefs lead them to open the house to escaped slaves. Groups can see the roof where slaves hid from the authorities, the well that led to the Spring House, historical artifacts such as ankle shackles and collars, historic reenactments, and more. Freedom fighters Harriet Tubman and William Still architects of the underground rail held meetings in this sacred space and countless numbers of enslaved Africans escaped slavery through this House! During the 1800s, the home became vital to the Underground Railroad movement. Harriet Tubman was sheltered and fed here with the enslaved Africans she would often later guide to Lucretia Mott’s nearby home in Cheltenham Most of the slaves helped by the Underground Railroad escaped border states such as Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland. In the deep South, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 made capturing escaped slaves a lucrative business, and there were fewer hiding places for them. Fugitive slaves were typically on their own until they got to certain points farther north. People known as “conductors” guided the fugitive slaves. Hiding places included private homes, churches and schoolhouses. These were called “stations,” “safe houses,” and “depots.” The people operating them were called “stationmasters.” There were many well-used routes stretching west through Ohio to Indiana and Iowa. Others headed north through Pennsylvania and into New England or through Detroit on their way to Canada. Follow Me Instagram https://instagram.com/haki_kweli_shak...
