The opulence of Southern plantations, like the Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina, painted a picture of the "high life" in the Antebellum South. These elegant manor homes, reminiscent of those in the film Gone With the Wind, were the settings for lavish banquets and social gatherings. However, this prosperity was built on a dark foundation: slavery. While slavery had been outlawed in much of Europe and even in Puritan New England, it continued to thrive in the American South, where enslaved people toiled on plantations. For many, the only hope for freedom was to escape. Under the cover of night, some enslaved people would risk everything, sneaking through gardens and forests to head north. This perilous journey was a lifeline for thousands of African-Americans who, with the help of the Underground Railroad, found sanctuary in New England. These welcoming homes offered them a taste of freedom and a place to finally feel at home.
