#starfort #fort #abandonedplaces Near the border between Portugal and Spain an unusual structure stands out from above, a striking example of military architecture that has protected its country for almost 260 years. Fort Of Our Lady Of Grace is located in the village of Alcáçova. Alchasovas Submerged into the 1300ft ‘Hill Of Grace’ a dominant and strategic point that has been used in war since 1658. Built in 1763 by order of the king, its pentagonal shape maximised its defence and view over the battlefield. The fort consists of three defensive lines and was once regarded as impregnable. It’s reservoir holds water sufficient for the garrison of 2000 men for two years and stores of corn and provisions for that time are also laid up, it even has a natural well.
