having set records in box offices around the world, Black Panther was unquestionably a huge 'success' for Marvel Studios and i think it's safe to say that most agree that it's a great movie. that said, i've noticed a huge difference in how people have consumed and responded to Black Panther and that difference-- wait for it!-- lies along racial / ethnic fault lines. Surprise, Surprise. when non-black movie goers watch Black Panther, they come away from it as they would any other Hollywood Blockbuster of an action movie. "yep, that Black Panther sure did have a great cast, stunning visuals and a good story! sooo excited for Infinity Wars!!" and when viewed like any other Marvel Comics flic, sure. i see where that kind of response comes from. i mean, Black Panther /is/ a great movie, Marvel or not, and i suppose that when viewed by someone who isn't bla-- i mean, uncritically minded-- i suppose it’s easy to miss the many gems that director Ryan Coogler and his team not only included throughout the movie but infused into the very plot of the movie itself. so here i am with my personal musings about some of those gems, why many people's consumption and / or response to this movie leaves me uncomfortable and why i find both Marvel's (potential) erasure of a canon, queer black couple and the disappointing hashtag activism surrounding that too much to bear. there will be spoilers. ----- TABLE OF CONTENTS ----- @01:20 - my #WakandaForever✊🏿 isn't your #WakandaForever✊ - @03:47 - let's talk about Wakanda @05:23 - let’s talk about #BringOurGirlsBack @06:39 let’s talk about Killmonger @11:37 - let’s talk about African American estrangement @15:06 - let's talk about the Dora Milaje @16:11 - let’s talk about #LetAyoHaveAGirlfriend @19:36 - your #WakandaForever✊🏿 isn't my #WakandaForever✊ --------- LINKS -------- ※ "my #WakandaForever✊🏿 isn't your #WakandaForever✊" (text post) -- coming soon ※ story time: when “American” is more important than “African” -- http://queerascat.tumblr.com/post/155... ========= SOCIAL MEDIA ======== Tumblr: / queerascat ------------ / blaqueer Twitter: / queerascat Instagram: / nighstar.photography Snapchat: queerascat Skype: nighstar LINE: nighstar Hangouts: queerascat at gmail dot com email: queerascat at gmail dot com =================================
