In this week’s teaching, On Divorce, Dr. David Harris walks carefully and thoughtfully through one of Jesus’ most difficult and often-misunderstood teachings. Continuing through the Gospel of Mark into Mark Chapter 10, this message addresses divorce not as a soundbite issue, but as a deeply human and deeply spiritual reality. Beginning with Jesus’ words about salt, fire, and peace, Dr. Harris sets the stage for the Pharisees’ challenge: “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” What follows is not a legal loophole, but a return to God’s original design for marriage—rooted in creation, covenant, and faithfulness. This teaching explores: • The meaning of being the salt of the earth and Jesus’ call to live at peace with one another • The cultural and theological debate between the schools of Shammai and Hillel • Why Jesus points beyond Moses back to Genesis and God’s design for marriage • The concept of hardness of heart and how sin fractures relationships • The biblical exceptions surrounding divorce, including marital unfaithfulness and abandonment • Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 7 and God’s call for believers to live in peace • The difference between biblical instruction and modern relationship expectations • God’s own experience of covenant betrayal—and His desire for reconciliation • The hope that one day, in the Kingdom of Heaven, all broken relationships will be made whole This message does not minimize the pain of divorce, nor does it offer easy answers. Instead, it invites us to see marriage, faithfulness, and reconciliation through the lens of God’s grace, human brokenness, and the restorative work of Christ. God has every reason to give humanity a certificate of divorce—yet He chooses reconciliation. 📍 For more teachings or to connect with the church, visit: 👉 www.ferndalecommunitychurch.org
