Last year was snow, this year was rain + wind. It was almost a rainout, but they dragged one of the power eaters up from the muddy field, and ran 5 engines on it. A total of 5 engines went on the Power Eater that rainy day. This is #3, a big 23-90 Baker Uniflow. We have known this engine for 30+ years, and it has always been well maintained through 2 owners. Its nickname is "Mr. T". Terminology: "23-90" is the advertised horsepower on the drawbar and belt pulley. In practice, all of these old engines and early tractors easily exceeded this rating. This "90 HP" engine recently dynoed 110.7 HP on the Prony Brake at Mt. Hope. See "Prony Brake Measuring Steam Engine Horsepower - Mt Hope Show". "Uniflow" means that the used steam is exhausted via ports at the center of the cylinder. Thus no power is wasted pushing the steam back out thru the relatively smaller ports at the ends of the cylinder. The popcorn sound is rain on the plastic bag over the camera.
