"Echo's Last Words" (2022) by Ethan Gurwitz - Meadows Wind Ensemble, Bethany Jelinek (Soprano), Jared Beu (Conductor). Program Notes: This piece is about Echo in Greek mythology. Cursed by Hera to only be able to repeat the last few words someone says, Echo falls in love with Narcissus. He falls in love with his own reflection andEcho cannot communicate her feelings to him because of her curse. This piece incorporates stunning and vivid text by my close friend Emma Bolton, one of the most gifted writers I’ve ever met. Movement 1, Wrath, pertains to the curse placed upon Echo by Hera. Movement 2, Reflections, is about Echo falling in love with Narcissus, and Movement 3, Farewell, describes the tragic outcome of the myth. In the piece, I incorporate various themes and motifs for Echo, Narcissus, Hera, the curse, and love, among others, and develop these themes throughout the three movements. (See text below.) -Program Note by Ethan Gurwitz "Lament Over the Withered Body of Narcissus", by Emma Bolton Mourning, would that I answer the secret question Bound in my tongue, lost among trees. You have glimpsed shaken mirrors for far too long, Now rest your head, by force if you must, Drowning, Suffocating, Within the lush, sticky cool Of the grass in the heat of the— Morning, would that you had learned from me, From whispered cries, from a silent gaze; That pride, that sentient, writhing lion, Slick in oil, trapped in the pit, Would pull your slender neck Until it aches, until it snaps-- Until it weeps. Know not thyself, but me, but my words which are yours which are mine, Let your exhalation be the air that I breathe, and fill it with words spun from silk and honey-bathed. Do not leave my basket empty of fruit from which to pick and praise your gilded face. --- This is a privilege to share. Thank you, Ethan, Emma, and to the Meadows Wind Ensemble for their determination and love in preparing this performance.
