Rain Coming (1982) by Tōru Takemitsu (1930 - 1996) performed in rehearsal by the Meadows Wind Ensemble, Jared Beu (conductor). Recorded February 16, 2023. Tōru Takemitsu (1930 - 1996) was a Japanese composer who made a lasting impact in modern music through his innovations in the interpretation of time, orchestration and sound color. Building upon influences including Debussy, Impressionism and the avant-garde, he was also a friend and spiritual successor to Olivier Messiaen, who inspired his use of modes and irregular meter. Evoking a uniquely natural sense of pacing and timbre, Takemitsu synthesized elements of both 20th-century Western and traditional Japanese aesthetics. His legacy is also established in his numerous film scores and the profound impact he had on other contemporaries including composer Oliver Knussen and conductor Seiji Ozawa. Rain Coming (for chamber orchestra) is a pinnacle work in a collection of chamber pieces entitled Waterscapes which Takemitsu composed throughout the 1980’s. The music is inspired by the many natural journeys through which the fall and course of rain and water reaches the all encompassing “sea of tonality”. Musically, many distinct soundscapes inspired by an initial theme from the alto flute transform and morph through the orchestra toward resolution. Evoking the experience before a rainfall, a feature of our planet which is constantly beginning and ending somewhere, Takemitsu’s music opens a brief metaphorical glimpse of a recurring moment in the unending progression of nature.
