So where does all this time improvement come from in comparison to the previous run that was uploaded? It comes from running with 1 HP Strats. See, unlike in the base game, Dark Star lets you set your Max HP to 1 using certain NPCs, such as Chet Rippo. Having a Max HP of 1 may seem risky, but its upside is enormous. See, by having a Max HP stat of 1, you can take advantage of both Perfect Rush and Mega Rush at the same time. This means that with just 3 BP, you can have +6 attack. The strat here takes this two steps further however by adding P Up, D Down and 1 of the 2 Power Plus Badges. This means we have +8 Attack using just 9 BP (Power Plus only costs 4 BP in Dark Star, unlike the base game where it costs 6). This changes our damage breakpoints dramatically. Now we're hitting for 9-14 damage with our Quake badges. 9 or 10 with Quake Hammer, 10 or 12 with Power Quake, and 11 or 14 with Mega Quake. Quakes are the best AoE attacks that Mario can use due to their consistent damage and Defense Piercing on most enemies. In addition, having a Max HP of 1 also means we can take permanent advantage of the new Mega Saver badge. This reduces our move costs by 3 FP when Mario has 1 HP, and also only costs 1 BP to equip. The reduced FP cost from Mega Saver is compounded further with the massive attack boost as it means we can use the weaker moves early on to hit the necessary breakpoints. This affects our items, since now we can use fewer Dual Jellies and can replace them with Stop Watches, and the new Bomb Fruits. On top of all that, while having a max HP stat of 1 may seem risky, it's not quite as risky in the Pit as you might think it would be. Another new badge we can take advantage of in this state is the new Last Chance. While it may cost 3 BP to equip, Last Chance makes it so that we can survive any one lethal hit per battle. When generally 1 enemy at most survives Turn 1, it means we don't really need to worry about having any defense at all. Even if an enemy breaks through Last Chance, we still have 1 revive available from a Life Shroom prior to Floor 90, and we can pickup an additional Life Shroom if needed on Floor 90 itself. However, you don't want to pickup said Life Shroom if you haven't needed to use the Life Shroom already in inventory. This is because in Dark Star, Life Shrooms all proc at once instead of only 1 per instance of HP reaching 0. With multiple Life Shrooms, in essence we would recover 10 HP * the number of Life Shrooms that we had in our inventory if our HP reaches 0; and then all Life Shrooms would be consumed at once. Paper Mario Dark Star Edition is a ROM Hack of Paper Mario developed by Shadeblade. This hack adds a lot of new content to the game and increases the difficulty. Some of the content (various badge and enemy sprites and maps) was taken from Master Quest, but most of it is entirely new. This mod is meant to be about as difficult as Master Quest Jr, but there are badges that increase the health and damage of enemies.
