Paper Mario Dark Star Edition is a ROM Hack of Paper Mario developed by Shadeblade. This hack adds a lot of new content to the game and increases the difficulty. Some of the content (various badge and enemy sprites and maps) was taken from Master Quest, but most of it is entirely new. This mod is meant to be about as difficult as Master Quest Jr, but there are badges that increase the health and damage of enemies. This Speedrun focuses around the Pit of 100 Trials, an homage to Paper Mario's direct sequel, the Thousand Year Door. 100 floors of battles featuring enemies all throughout the game! The patch for Dark Star Edition can be found here: https://github.com/Shade-Blade/PMDark... Base ROM is not included, you will need to obtain a Paper Mario 64 ROM to play this yourself. There are some constraints, but really the big constraint is no using the Rainbow Stone, which allows you to use cheats. However, there are things that I DID allow myself to use. For example, I DID allow myself to use the Void Stone for this speedrun, despite it being the reward for completing the Pit. By extension, all the badges that can be obtained in the Pit are allowed as well. This is worth keeping in mind because there are 2 badges that are rewards for completing certain floors in the Pit that I have equipped for pretty much the entire run. Head Start allows Mario to have 2 actions on Turn 1, and Perfect Rush gives +2 to Mario's Attack if Mario has full HP. To get through the Pit as fast as possible, you need to do everything you can to ensure that each battle takes as few turns as possible. However, it's not quite that simple either. While it certainly is the case that you want battles to be as short as possible, some fights, especially as you get deeper, require you to plan carefully. You have to know when you can safely KO all enemies on Turn 1. When you can't do so, you have to know how to safely buy time to do things such as restore your Star Power and/or your HP and FP. Fortunately, there are new badges we can use where in some cases I cannot emphasize the importance of. It may seem weird that I have Stellar Nova equipped for pretty much the entire run even though I don't really use it until I get to Floor 70. However, there is good reason to have Stellar Nova. This badge doubles the potency of the next Star Power you use. Despite doubling the cost of said Star Power as well, it's more than worth it. Using this in conjunction with Time Out or Lullaby can buy you a lot of time to think about your next moves to finish a fight, or it can get you out of a sticky situation. I can't emphasize the importance of Stellar Nova for a first run of the Pit in DSE either. Using it in conjunction with Group Focus, all 3 Deep Focus Badges, and the new Health and Flower Focus badges means you can restore your HP and FP all at the same time, and safely as well. This strategy also lets you save your items so they can specifically be used on the higher floors, where the quirks of the enemies present makes the items most needed.
