Kalaj Dame and DJ Chevy discuss the power of a remix, whether it's building a movement, advancing your career, or just being heard in the club. In 2002, Kalaj Dame made that move to Atlanta. Like most up-and-coming producers, he sought out to be heard in the industry. In this clip, he tells his story about being a producer, working with artists, playing a hand in artist development and getting an artist signed to Shaq's label (Nita Blanc, sister of LeLee Lyons from SWV), working with DJs, and managing a team of producers for Scooter Braun. The conversation continues, as Kalaj Dame goes in on how he would produce his own remixes vs. rapping over instrumentals. DJ Chevy joins the conversation, telling us that, in order to be heard, it's all about convincing the DJ that you're worthy of the 3 minutes, 20 seconds during his set. A lot of times this meant remixing a popular track, adding the DJs tag over the track, and passing off a $100 bill that night. If a DJ puts the wrong track into rotation, he can clear the dance floor and cause damage to his own reputation. It's important to work with a DJ and give him some time to work with your track.
