In the latest episode of the Carvel Planking series the Principal of the Sydney Wooden Boat School Ian Smith shows how he built the mast and spars for his retirement project, a 24' Ranger class gaff-rigged sloop named VOLUNTEER. Smithy has decades of experience of building wooden spars, as well as decades of teaching others about all aspects of wooden boatbuilding and all the techniques he shows are the product of this experience. He shows how sparking techniques can be applied to other shaped items in a boat like the spreaders and the tiller.
