"Shaw Rising," a documentary depicting the history of Shaw University and our impact on the course of education and social justice in the United States, from our founding in 1865 to the inauguration of our 18th president, Dr. Paulette R. Dillard. The documentary was written and produced by Hal Goodtree, directed by Tim Finkbiner. Hosted by Shaw Univerity and the National Alumni Association of Shaw University, the national watch party date marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on the campus of Shaw University. The meeting between student leaders of the recent sit-ins and the civil rights elders of the day was facilitated by Shaw alumna and activist Ella Baker. Then-Shaw sophomore Dr. David C. Forbes, Sr. became a founding member of SNCC. The student-led advocacy group went on to become a major force in America's civil rights movement.
