Trek VRX 400 long travel frame was produced around 1999. According to its description, the frame’s rear suspension system features the Fully Independent Linkage (FIL) system which isolates the suspension from the rear wheel and puts the load on the single pivot swing arm so the rear wheel tracks straight in all conditions. It starts your ride plush, but ramps up on big hits so you don’t bottom out. The geometry also gives a very responsive ride at high speeds. Building up this bike takes me some time, e.g. it is not easy to find the replacement for the rear shock, the Cane Creek AD 5, in the local market with good quality and performance. Replace old and rusty linkage bolts with titanium bolts. The rear brake mount is in a unique size, it has a strange size which is in 70mm eye to eye between two bolts, compared with the standard IS break mount, which is in 74.2mm. I planned to choose 2X9 setup, but later found that the most suitable combination for this Trek VRX frame’s E-Type front derailleur should be 3X. So at last, I’ve decided to choose the 1X9 setup with chain guide to give more vintage downhill feel to this bike. I tried to add more Trek elements and retro feel to this bike, including the Bontrager Big Earl handlebar, Big Earl crankset, Bontrager Montrose saddle, Marzocchi Z3 fork (Year 2001), Shimano XT 755 disc brake, Truvativ chain guide, Truvativ paddle, Truvativ seatpost, Shimano LX m570 shifter and derailleur, Hope Pro 2 hubs. Keep smile on your face and some love of mountain biking in your heart. Special thanks to my friend Ramen the Goodman for offering me this frame as a free gift.
