In this clip from his classes on the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, Paramahamsa Prajnananandaji talks about vichara and atma vichara. He begins with an etymological discussion of the sanskrit root verb “chara” which means: “to go,” “to inquire,” “to think”, “to analyze,” “to deliberate,” “to make a decision.” Paramahamsaji says that when there is the kind of deliberation, or inquiry, that can be defined as vichara it creates a “movement” in us that propels us. However, when a yogi is consciously thinking, being mindful, then they can observe the thoughts that are propelling them onward, they can decide if they agree with the direction the movement will take them, and they can seek and find the cause of the thoughts moving them. This is extremely helpful, for example, when thoughts of anger or fear threaten to overpower us. As yogis, as seekers practicing mindfulness, we can inquire what is the cause of these thoughts? We can find the cause and address it, thus having more control over our own movements and mind. The next level of vichara Paramahamsaji mentions, is atma vichara, or “self inquiry,” which Ramana Maharshi speaks about. Paramahamsa Prajnananandaji is a revered Kriya Yoga master who travels the world over teaching Kriya Yoga and how to practice spirituality in daily lives.
