I replied, “It is I.” “Go away,” said my Beloved, “for you are not really in love.” Time passed, and once again I came to the door of my Beloved’s house and knocked. “Who is it?” asked my Beloved. “It is You.” “Now that you are I,” replied my Beloved, “you may come in.”’~ old Sufi tradition, as transmitted by Mushtaq Ali al Ansari The topic this evening — “Between Lover and Beloved: A Sufi perspective on love, sex, and relationship.” Whereas some paths and traditions encourage withdrawal from life, we prefer the opposite approach. We practice while engaged with the world. Engagement with the world typically includes intimate partnership with another. It includes marriage and children in most cases. You will be hard pressed to find a Sufi teacher who did not have a partner and a family. Let’s discuss why this is. We affirm that the most powerful way to walk the Path is in community, and the most profound level of walking in community is sharing the Path in partnership with another. This is of course also the most difficult way.
