It’s not a modifier. It’s not a new light. It’s a setting you already have. When we study beauty photography — really any photography — lighting is usually the first thing that drives the viewer’s eye. But sometimes… the lighting needs to get out of the way. In this breakdown, I walk through how I use depth of field as a quiet but powerful creative tool. Not just to blur the background — but to control attention. At f/3.2 at 187mm, depth of field becomes directional. The eyes stay sharp. The lashes and brows hold detail. The cheekbones glow. And everything else — the neckline, the shoulder, even the back eye — gently falls away. That’s not accidental. That’s aperture doing its job. This image was created with a single Aputure LS 600d placed behind the subject, bouncing off V-flats and foam core. No front fill. No extra lights behind camera. Just controlled return light and intentional camera settings. I also break down: • Why catchlights tell you everything about the setup • How backlit bounce creates soft return without front lighting • Why constant lights make shallow depth of field easier than strobes • And how to read light inside the eyes before you ever see the BTS Lighting matters. But aperture might be the quieter tool you’re under-using. ⸻ SETTINGS • Canon R5 • RF 70–200mm @ 187mm • f/3.2 • ISO 400 ⸻ CHAPTERS 0:00 – When lighting should get out of the way 0:43 – The quiet player: depth of field 2:42 – Backlit bounce with one light 5:11 – Reading the catchlights 5:53 – Full BTS breakdown 7:06 – Why constant lights make this easier #beautyphotography #lightingtutorial #portraitlighting #photographytips 💯 For more information click here: https://linktr.ee/allencooley 💬 Did you like this video?
