The Steigerlied (also "Steigermarsch" or "Glück auf, der Steiger kommt") is a German miner's and folk song, which originally comes from the Erzgebirge in Saxony and is now also widespread in other regions of Germany. The origins of the Steigerlied date back to the 16th century. The third and fourth stanzas appeared in a similar form as the eleventh and twelfth stanzas in the song "Es soll ein Meidlein früh auf stan", which was included in the songbook "Bergreihen I", published in Zwickau in 1531. The first evidence of the Steigerlied as such can be found in the description of a festive event that was held in Schneeberg in 1678 in honor of the Saxon Elector, Johann Georg II, which a choir sang "Wach auff, wach auff, der Steyer kommt!" Later, this choral with the known march melody was first printed in the Bergliederbüchlein published in Freiberg, Saxony, around 1700. The theme of the Steigerlied is the hope of the miners to return to the daylight and to their families after the hard and dangerous work in the mine. Other sources speak of the fact that the refrain "Glückauf!“ the luck conjures, may the mountain open up and allow the mining of mineral resources. Since 2020, the song has been in the inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of North Rhine-Westphalia, since 2023 in the Federal Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» Disclaimer: All videos are apolitical.
