New Model Army 'Running in the Rain' Bass cover. New Model Army's first two albums featured the excellent Stuart Morrow on bass, easily one of rock's finest bass pick players, yet vastly underrated or perhaps simply overlooked. Stuart's lines are aggressive, punchy, crammed full of interesting ideas and just great fun to play, yet you will not find accurate tabs/transcriptions of his work anywhere and there is precious little archive footage available of him playing live. Here is my latest demo/cover of his work, the breathless Running in the Rain from the Vengeance album. The first thing I'd note about the original tune is that the bassline has been doubletracked, and panned wide which in part gives it that huge punchy sound. They are mostly identical (note-for-note) lines but in a couple of spots they diverge - Stuart does a different octave fill at the top of the neck (there is a short version and a longer one). Listen carefully to the original track on headphones and you should hear these. My guess would be that this was simply a decision taken by the producer at the time, i.e. to include two of Stuart's takes in the final mix. I chose to follow one of the lines Stuart plays rather than record them both which seemed a bit overkill, and both fills are included in the one part anyway. Compression adds to the punchy tone, and what sounds to me like a chorus pedal again. Lots of fast cross picking in this one!
