https://healthykidneyinc.com/ Today’s video is about the impact of secondary hyperparathyroidism on kidney disease. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which a disease outside of the parathyroid glands causes all of the parathyroid glands to become enlarged and hyperactive. Kidney failure and vitamin D deficiency are among the top causes of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Robert references a study from the Clinical Kidney Journal published on January 20th, 2021. In this big study, they observed a group of people with chronic kidney disease from stages 1 to 5 and they looked at how many people developed secondary hyperparathyroidism. About 2500 people took part in the study and approximately 750 among them developed secondary hyperparathyroidism. The parathyroid glands are four small glands of the endocrine system which regulate the calcium in our bodies. They are located in the neck behind the thyroid and they secrete a hormone that continuously monitors and regulates blood calcium levels. This is very crucial as an imbalance in calcium levels can lead to many negative outcomes. A parathyroid (PTH) test is highly recommended for anyone dealing with serious kidney damage. In the study, they found that people who developed secondary hyperparathyroidism had a worse survival rate, their CKD progression rate was 5 times faster, they found more cardiovascular events like heart disease and more fractures along with other parts of the body negatively affected. Your biggest takeaway from this video is to make sure you get your parathyroid levels checked. It’s the PTH level on your bloodwork and you can ask your medical doctor to have this looked at. If you find out you have high PTH levels, there are a lot of things you can do to control it. There is a high rate of success in managing your PTH levels. Calcitriol is a medication that is a good option to help control high PTH levels. The main thing here is to get tested and get your PTH levels checked. Many people with kidney disease tend to ignore this issue as they’re not aware enough of the harm it can do. If your PTH levels are left high and unchecked, it’s going to progress your kidney disease much faster and it’s really easy to control this issue. Any nephrologist or kidney doctor should not have an issue testing these levels as with kidney disease, there are numerous areas to address to really get an optimal positive outcome. This is just one area that is not widely looked at by every kidney disease sufferer. x Some recommended articles: The Importance of Ketoanalogues of essential amino acids https://healthykidneyinc.com/ketoanal...
