On November 10, the Southern California Horticultural Society was pleased to host Kenton J. Seth, a Colorado-based garden designer who presented a webinar on crevice gardening. His program will take a look at this increasingly popular and unusual planting style which he considers, is by far the best way to grow certain plants. Seth will also be referencing his recently published book on the topic “The Modern Crevice Garden” (coauthored with Paul Spriggs), which showcases fresh opportunities for artistic design and ecological gardening, including saving water. Seth has a small nursery where he grows plants for use in his designs, and while crevice gardens dominate his projects, he also works with natives, dryland gardens, and most recently, meadows. Crevice gardening is appropriate to a wide range of spaces from small gardens to large parks and is adaptable to many climates. It offers western American gardeners a great tool for growing specialty plants, creating a stunning new garden feature, or establishing habitats to help their gardens become more earth-friendly. Seth’s work is found from locales throughout western Colorado to the U.S. coasts, and even in a few places overseas, and can be seen by visiting PaintbrushGardens.com, or Instagram at @PlantForTheaApocalypse. In addition to the publication of his recent book, Seth’s work can be found in an article in Fine Gardening magazine, as well as on YouTube and on his own blog at www.kentonjseth.blogspot.com. This method of planting in small, sometimes overlooked or under-planted areas can give all of us food for thought, and we are anticipating learning something new from this webinar that we might choose to try in our own home gardens.
