A new, very strong eruptive phase began at the volcano at 20:30 local time tonight and is still ongoing at the time of this update. The activity of the volcano accelerated at 22:56 local time, and produced a tall ash column rising about 8 km above the summit that is drifting west and southwest, according to the local volcano observatory. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin issued a warning to aviation about of an ash plume rising possibly to even higher altitudes of up to 53,000 ft (approx. 16 km). Lewotobi is a twin volcano located in the southeastern part of the island of Flores, Indonesia. It has two peaks; the Lewotobi Laki-laki (Male Lewotobi) and Lewotobi Perempuan (Female Lewotobi) stratovolcanoes. The more active Lewotobi Laki-laki is about 2.1 km (1.3 mi) northwest of the taller Lewotobi Perempuan. Older forms of its name include Lobetabi, Lovotivo and Loby Toby. An eruption has been ongoing since 23 December 2023 in Lewotobi Laki-laki, displacing up to 6,500 people as of January 2024. On 4 November 2024, the volcano spewed molten debris at several villages some 4 km (2.5 mi) away, destroying homes and killing at least ten. The Centre of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation recommended that a 7 km (4.3 mi) radius around the volcano be evacuated. Seven villages were affected by the eruption. A larger eruption occurred on 7 November. On 8 November, the volcano erupted several times, one bearing an ash plume with a height reaching 10 km (6.2 mi). On 9 November, it erupted again, scrambling authorities to evacuate approximately 16,000 people from nearby villages. The eruption caused flight disruptions in Bali and the cancellation of a jazz festival in Labuan Bajo.
