It had been five years since my last, and first, visit to the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway. However, with the prospect of two ex-Great Western locos working the line for their 'Steam in the South Wales Valleys' gala, I thought it was time for a revisit. The two locomotives in question were 5600 Class no.5637, from the East Somerset Railway, and Small Pannier Tank no.6435, from the Bodmin & Wenford Railway. Originally, Pannier Tank no.4612 (also from Bodmin) was due to visit, but was unable to attend, due to suffering a motion failure, and as such, 6435 was sent in to substitute. As well as the two guests, the railway also had two of their own in action, Hunslet Austerity no.71515 'Mech. Navvies ltd.' and Andrew Barclay 'Rosyth No. 1'. This video, however, focuses solely on the two Western tanks, who we see tackling the steep gradients (Up to 1 in 24, I believe) between Blaenavon High Level, Furness Sidings and Whistle Inn, including two solo shots each, and a non-stop banking run, whilst Mech Navvies gives some competition alongside on the branch to Big Pit. Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone. Enjoy.
