A little trip to South Wales for the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway's annual September steam gala, held between Friday 12th and Sunday 14th. Joining the ranks, this year, was the Bluebell Railway's delightful little A1 'Terrier' No.72 'Fenchurch', which is believed to be the first of its class to ever work in South Wales. Also visiting was the newly resorted Hunslet No.1589 'Newstead', a loco that was thought lost in preservation until it was rediscovered in 2016, later making its debut at the North Norfolk Railway's recent 50th anniversary gala, following an extensive overhaul. The final visiting loco was Hudswell Clarke No.1208 'Illingworth', currently on an extended stay on the line and running as 'Harold', reflecting its time spent working in South Wales at the Ebbw Vale steelworks during the mid to late 30s. This year's gala would see the official opening of the newly reconstructed platform two at Blaenavon High Level, seeing its first passenger trains since 1941, although I wouldn't get down that way to cover any arrivals or departures, unfortunately. The full line up: Home Fleet: Hunslet 0-6-0ST No.1873 'Jessie' Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST No.1219 'Caledonia Works' (Last appearance on the line before moving back to Williton, on the West Somerset Railway, to see out the remainder of its current boiler ticket) Visiting: Hunslet 0-6-0ST No.1589 'Newstead' LBSCR A1 Class 0-6-0T No.72 'Fenchurch' Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST No.1208 'Illingworth' A challenging day with the camera, filming in an ever changing mix of wind, rain and sun, but still a decent one, with the usual top show put on by everyone at the P&B and some terrific performances from the cast of tank engines thrashing about the line's steep gradients between Blaenavon High Level and Furness Sidings. Filmed on Saturday 13th September 2025 using a Panasonic HC-X1500 with an Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone. I hope you enjoy the video.
