72 Fenchurch Steals the Spotlight: Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway Autumn Steam Gala - 2025

A short trip to the Pontypool and Blaenavon Steam Railway for their Autumn Steam Gala. This was a fairly spontaneous trip to South Wales, only decided on the morning before! The line is just over 3 miles long, between Coed Avon and Blaenavon High Level at the lower end of the line, to Whistle Inn at the top of the line, with 1 intermediate stop at Furness sidings, where the line branches off to Big Pitt; quite the network. The line has slowly been growing, and this weekend included a major milestone, as the second platform at Blaenavon High Level was opened, 84 years after its first closure. There was no shortage of motive power. Resident locomotives included Hunslet No. 1873 ‘Jessie’, Hudswell Clarke No. 1208 ‘Harold’ and Andrew Barclay No. 1218 ‘Caledonia Works’. These ran alongside the visiting locomotives: Hunslet No. 1589 ‘Newstead’, which had just returned to steam after 53 years, and the star of the show, LBSCR No. 72 ‘Fenchurch’.
