Trooper's Narrative: On February 26, 2026, I attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2016 Volkswagen Touareg bearing Arkansas tag TKKPO for speeding. The Touarge continued southbound on Interstate 49, taking the 67B onto Fulbright Expressway. The Touareg continued on the 67B off-ramp, not attempting to pull over. The Touareg continued on Fulbright Express before reaching Futrall Drive, still not attempting to pull over and also accelerating. I notified Troop L Dispatch that I was in pursuit of the Touareg. Based on the driver not stopping and entering a populated area, I felt it was safest for all involved to perform a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI). As the Touareg exited onto Futrall Ave, I attempted a TVI on the Touareg. The Touareg was able to drive out of the TVI and continue westbound on Futrall Drive. The driver was attempting to wave his hand, signaling that he was stopping. I then used a second TVI to end the pursuit. The Touareg struck a concrete wall on the south side of Futrall Drive and then traveled back across all lanes of Futrall, where he left the roadway and struck a highway sign. The driver of the vehicle exited and began to flee on foot. The driver, who was identified as Zachary Mason, ran across both lanes of Futrall Drive and into a wooded area. Trp. Fricke was able to stay in his unit and take Mason into custody. Upon making contact with Mason, I noted a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his person. I also noted a small cut above his eye. EMS was called to the scene to check Mason, and he stated he didn't want to go to the hospital. While on scene, I read Mason his implied consent rights. Mason stated that he understood but refused a breath test. During my conversation with Mason, I noted his eyes were blood shot and watery. Mason stated that he had been out drinking but didn't state where. Mason was transported to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Mason was charged with the following: DWI Speeding 90-70 Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test Fleeing (F) Fleeing on Foot
