Forever 21 From $4 Billion Empire To Complete Bankruptcy In 1984, Do Won Chang and Jin Sook Chang opened a nine-hundred-square-foot clothing store in Highland Park, Los Angeles with eleven thousand dollars in savings. They were Korean immigrants who had arrived in the United States three years earlier with no college education and limited English. Do Won had worked three jobs simultaneously, up to nineteen hours per day, as a janitor, gas station attendant, and coffee shop worker. Jin Sook worked as a hairdresser. After three years, they had saved enough to open one store. They called it Fashion 21 and targeted the Korean-American community. In the first year, that nine-hundred-square-foot store generated seven hundred thousand dollars in sales. The Changs opened a new store every six months. By 1989, they had eleven stores across California. By 2001, one hundred twenty-two stores in the United States. By 2005, four hundred stores and six hundred forty million dollars in sales. By 2006, they crossed one billion dollars in annual revenue.
