(20 Dec 1994) Natural Sound Russia continued its attacks on the breakaway republic of Chechnya today, bombing civilian and military targets as troops fought their way to the capital from two directions. But Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev remained defiant saying he would not give in to Moscow's demands that his troops disarm. On the front line ten kilometres north of Grozny, Muslim fighters loyal to Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev await the Russian army. Poorly equipped, and suffering in the bitterly cold weather, the soldiers are none the less in high spirits. Fierce fighting was reported Monday in the village of Dolinsk, about 15 miles north west of Grozny. Yesterday Russian jets attacked power plants and other strategic targets. Bomb craters around Grozny's television tower stand testimony to the superior military might of the Russian army - clear evidence of Moscow's attempts to stop TV transmissions from the Chechen capital. In the central square where Dudayev supporters gather for Islamic prayers, Chechen men dance a traditional war dance, the Zikr. They say they're ready to fight and die. They gather at the Presidential Palace, warming their hands at the eternal flame of city's war memorial. The Russian news agency Itar-Tass said today's (Tuesday) raids targeted residential areas and administrative buildings in Grozny. A number of casualties were reported. It remains to be seen whether these latest raids are enough to weaken the resolve of the defiant Chechens.
