Protection methods to overwinter palm trees and exotic plants in zone 5B Ontario Canada. The size and hardiness of the plant determines how elaborate the methods have to be. For many bulbs and deciduous plants a thick layer of manure or dry leaves covered with a tarp is all that is required. Build a cold frame with a 2x4" frame covered with twin wall polycarbonate, cover with 6 mil poly (vapour barrier material), wrap the plant with a string of C9 Christmas lights or place an electric space heater to keep at desired temperature.On milder sunny days it is a good idea to ventilate the cold frame(s) to remove excess moisture to prevent fungus issues. * Correction, the temperature is controlled to a range between 35-45 F or 2-7 C not 2-5 C.*
