Latest installment of the Commander Coin Series brought to us by a collaboration between SD Bullion and Scottsdale Mint. This one features Hernan Cortes. Cortes left Spain in the early 1500s and arrived in Hispaniola then Cuba. He then leads over 500 soldiers and a number of ships to explore Mexico and expand the Spanish Empire. When Cortes arrives in Mexico, he establishes Vera Cruz and scuttles his ships so there was no question they would not be returning to Cuba. Cortes then marches to the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan and meets Montezuma. He then takes him hostage and tells him they will rule together. However, the Governor of Cuba sends a force to Vera Cruz to go after Cortes. Cortes leaves to confront them, takes the commander hostage and gets the troops to join forces with him. He then returns to chaos in the Aztec Capital. The man Cortes left in charge was Gabriel de Alvarado had committed atrocities, murdered priests, and enraged the Aztec people. Cortes tells Montezuma to calm the crowd, and he is killed by a protestor's rock. This enrages the people even more and they turn on the Spanish and drive them from the city on a night referred to 'Noche Triste' (Sad Night). Cortes's Army sustained massive losses, so he recruits indigenous people throughout Mexico and returns to conquer the Aztec Capital. He then goes on to explore Central America and ends up discovering modern day California. Cotez's strategic vision and ability to lead on land and sea is why I think SD Bullion and Scottsdale Mint chose him for the Commander Series. I am in awe of the craftsmanship of Scottsdale Mint and the collaboration with SD Bullion to bring about this series. @sdbullion @ScottsdaleMint
