It’s time for another episode of our program the new standards We all know that Paul McCartney had a knack for creating characters in his songs. He once shared that most of his songs came straight from his imagination Some were inspired by real people—like Albert Kendall, who married Paul’s Aunt Millie and became the famous "Uncle Albert." Albert had this quirky habit—he’d only crack open the Bible when he was drinking. Whenever he got drunk, out came the Good Book, and he’d would recite verses out loud for anyone that would listen. Then there’s Wings’ hit “Let ‘Em In,”where Paul gives shoutouts to family and friends. But not all his characters came from real life. Think about “The Fool on the Hill,” the world of “Penny Lane,” the mysterious “Jenny Wren” from Chaos and Creation in the Backyard album, or the haunting “Eleanor Rigby” from the Revolver, the brilliant 7th studio album by The Beatles. But was Eleanor Rigby a real person? let’s find out. In an October 2021 piece for The New Yorker, Paul McCartney shared the heartfelt inspiration behind “Eleanor Rigby.”He revealed it came from an old woman who lived alone, someone he had come to know quite well. Paul would often run errands for her, then sit in her kitchen, listening to her stories while the faint hum of her crystal radio filled the room. “Just hearing her stories enriched my soul,” Paul reflected. “Those moments had a lasting impact and influenced the songs I would later write.” When Paul McCartney first started crafting what would become “Eleanor Rigby,” his protagonist wasn’t Eleanor at all—it was Miss Daisy Hawkins. In 1966, Paul shared the origins of the song with Sunday Times journalist Hunter Davies, revealing how the idea first took shape. “The first few bars just came to me,” Paul explained. “And I got this name in my head—‘Daisy Hawkins picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been.’ I don’t know why... but I couldn’t think of much more, so I set it aside for a day. A short time later, the story started to evolve. “The name ‘Father McCartney’ popped into Paul’s head, along with the line ‘all the lonely people,’” Paul continued. “But I worried people might think it was about my dad, sitting there knitting his socks or something. Dad’s a happy lad, so that wouldn’t do.” Determined to find a better fit, Paul turned to the phone book and stumbled across the name McKenzie...
