The Mernda Rail Extension is Melbourne's newest line. It's a 8km $600 million extension of the South Morang line built to serve some of Melbourne's growing northern suburbs. It will feature three new stations at Middle Gorge, Hawkstowe and Mernda. The new line will open for passengers on Sunday 26th August 2018, however on Sunday 19th August 2018 a community open day was held so people could visit the new stations and take a ride on the new line. Events and festivities were running at each of the new stations, while frequent shuttle trains were transporting passengers up and down the new line. In this video we visit each of the three new stations on the new line; taking a tour of each one and filming a couple of X'trapolis trains. We start the video at Middle Gorge station which is the first station on the new line from South Morang. The station was built to serve the Marymede Catholic College, and is the only station on the extension at ground level. We then visit Hawkstowe station which is an elevated station just off Plenty Road at Hawkstowe Parade (hence the name). We finish the video at Mernda station, the terminus of the new line. It's actually the second Mernda station, with the original opening in December 1889 and closing in November 1959. The new station will be premium status (staffed from first train to last) and will feature a bus interchange.
