THE PERFECT TEN FILM Film-makers: The Greater Manchester Birding City Region Project Follow on Twitter: @MancunianBirder @MancunianSpring The film is a tour of Greater Manchester where the birds are the superstars, starting in the Salford borough with Mute Swans on the Manchester Ship Canal and Salford Docklands. The Northern Lapwing represents Trafford, the film takes us to Carrington Moss via Pomona, and then into Manchester borough where the Rose-ringed Parakeet is a very colourful sight. Also bringing a big splash of colour is the Kingfisher. A recent arrival to Greater Manchester is the Little Egret. The tour then takes us to see the Stockport Mandarins, Wigan Willow Tits and the Rochdale Peregrines. Next, we welcome you to Oldham, the Owl borough. The film peaks on the moors with the Red Grouse. “The Perfect Ten” film is being premiered on social media at the virtual Manchester Festival of Nature on Sunday 28th June 2020. https://www.lancswt.org.uk/events/man... Follow on Twitter: @MancNature THE PERFECT TEN A main theme of the Greater Manchester Birding City Region Project is “The Perfect Ten”, these are ten bird species selected to represent each of the ten Greater Manchester boroughs. “The Perfect Ten” works on a number of different levels. Firstly, we suggest that these are ten birds that every Greater Manchester resident and visitor should see in their lifetime. To unite the Greater Manchester boroughs through connecting with nature and to stimulate civic pride in the environment. The GMBCR Project are proposing that all ten borough Councils formally adopt each bird as their official species. For marketing purposes and to increase investment in the Greater Manchester environment. To highlight the amazing birdlife that we have on our doorstep and to increase ecological awareness. GREATER MANCHESTER BIRDING CITY REGION Greater Manchester Birding City Region (GMBCR) is a world first project that started as a pledge to the inaugural Greater Manchester Green Summit in 2018. The GMBCR Project are James Walsh and Shaun Hargreaves, “We’ve been looking at the environment of Northern England for the last 15 years, with a focus on Greater Manchester, including several years research at the University of Salford”, says Shaun. James, also known as The Mancunian Birder, says “We are promoting Greater Manchester as the world’s first “birding city region”, a concept that can be transferred and utilised to any city region in the world. The vision is for a city region that recognises the positive benefits of birds and birding. Most people know about Greater Manchesters’ connection with bees, but this project is all about the birds and the bees with a focus on birds. Birding is a great way to connect with nature.” GMBCR is a pioneering project whose aims are: To put birding and the city regions incredible wealth of nature sites at the heart of Greater Manchesters’ Green New Deal. Nurturing nature and addressing species decline. To engage the people of Greater Manchester in birding activities, promoting the well proven mental and physical health benefits.
