Ecologist/author/freelance journalist James Walsh, aka The Mancunian Birder, takes you on a birding tour of his first ever local patch, the Altrincham/Timperley area of south Greater Manchester In October 2018 Timperley became the birding capital of Greater Manchester due to the presence of a rare bird, a juvenile Rosy Starling, also known as the Rose-coloured Starling, this was just the second time this species has ever been recorded in the Greater Manchester City Region The Rosy Starling attracted many birders to the suburbs of Timperley, a location that James Walsh has an intimate knowledge of, as a birder and as a field ecologist James spent his formative birding years watching, noting, counting and drawing the birds of this area as a member of the Timperley Young Ornithologist Club, and his notebooks kept during this time won James the Young Ornithologist of the Year title in 1985 In this 15 minute film, James reports from the Rosy Starling "twitch" and also takes viewers on a tour of the main birding sites around Altrincham - a wetland complex comprising King George V Pool, Stamford Park Lake and Timperley Moat This film includes footage of Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Robin, Swift, Mute Swan, Nuthatch, Canada Geese, Little Egret, Coot, Moorhen, Mallard and Mandarin Duck https://mancunianbirder.wordpress.com... James spent a year looking at this area professionally with the Greater Manchester Ecology Unit, discovered this area as a regular breeding site for Northern Pochard and also recorded 50 bird species in a day on 10th May 2006 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073WCV4F...
