Railways in the Algarve Episode xvii - Vila Real de Sánto António Station This video was shot on March 17 2015. (Forgot all about it till today!) The town of Vila Real de Sánto António (VRSA) is the end of the eastern leg of the Linha do Sul. It was an important station as VRSA lies on the west bank of the River Guadiana opposite Ayomonte on the east bank which is in Spain. It has a population of 19,000. Up until 1998 the only way to cross the river to Spain was by ferry. All passengers and goods went this way. At Ayamnote there was a station which allowed access to the Spanish railway network. A kilometre from VRSA Station was Vila Real de Sánto António Guadiana Stationalongside the river which catered for ferry traffic. A road bridge was opened in 1998 a few km upstream and saw a huge drop in passenger and freight and Vila Real de Sánto António Guadiana (and Ayamnote station) closed. The station building and platform are still there and can be seen on this video. Thanks for watching.
