“A Thing of Beauty” is an extract from Keats’ poem Endymion. It is a Romantic poem that celebrates nature and beauty. Below are the important poetic devices used in the poem, explained clearly for Class 12. 1. Alliteration Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of nearby words. Examples: “noble natures” – repetition of the sound ‘n’ “simple sheep” – repetition of the sound ‘s’ “cooling covert” – repetition of the sound ‘c’ This creates musical effect and rhythm in the poem. 2. Anaphora Repetition of a word at the beginning of consecutive lines. Example: “Some shape of beauty…” “Some shape of beauty…” The repetition of “Some” emphasizes that beauty exists in many different forms. 3. Metaphor An indirect comparison between two things. Example: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” Here, beauty is compared to eternal joy. “Bower quiet for us” The world of beauty is compared to a shady resting place. 4. Imagery Imagery means language that appeals to the senses. Examples: “The sun, the moon, Trees old and young, sprouting a shady boon” These lines create strong visual images of nature. The poem is full of natural imagery like flowers, streams, forest, daffodils, etc. 5. Personification Giving human qualities to non-living things. Example: “Trees old and young” Trees are described as if they have age like humans. “The gloomy days” Days are described as if they feel sadness. 6. Hyperbole Exaggeration for emphasis. Example: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” This is an exaggeration because beauty may not literally last forever, but its impact does. 7. Rhyme Scheme The poem follows a rhyming couplet pattern. Rhyme scheme: AABBCCDDEEFF This gives the poem a smooth and musical flow. 8. Symbolism Beauty symbolizes hope, positivity, and emotional strength. Nature symbolizes purity and healing power. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 📍Class 12 Playlist 👇 • 📌 English Class 12th Poem : • Class 12 Poems (Line by Line Explanation) • 📌 Class 12th English Literature : • Class 12 English Flamingo (Line to Line Ex... •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ✨About Me : I am Priyanka Gaur, an experienced educator who has served as a PGT English, Assistant Professor affiliated with Indraprastha University, and Vice Principal in a CBSE school. 📸 Social Media Handles : • INSTAGRAM : @priyankkaagauur / priyankkaagauur • Linkedin - / priyankkaagauur • Facebook- / priyankkaagauur •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• This series is specially designed to help Class 12 board students and aspirants preparing for competitive exams like DSSSB, KVS, and NVS.
